#1 Harvard University
The oldest college or university in the United States is Harvard University, which was established in 1636. More than 20% of Harvard's student body is international, and the majority of them pursue graduate degrees. Although Harvard is centred in Cambridge, Massachusetts, it also has facilities in the neighbouring city of Boston, including the Harvard Medical School. The university is the institution with the largest endowment in the entire world. Over 100 centres at Harvard do study in a variety of fields.
There are 11 other degree-granting schools in addition to the undergraduate college that make up the university, including the highly regarded Business School, Graduate School of Education, Law School, and John F. Kennedy School of Government. Several teaching hospitals, notably Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Brigham and Women's Hospital, are connected to the medical school. The most common majors for Harvard undergraduates are social sciences, biological sciences, history, math, and psychology. The academic year at the institution is divided into semesters, and classes are taught in English.The majority of undergraduate students live on campus for their entire four years, beginning as freshmen in one of the 12 undergraduate houses located around the Harvard Yard in the middle of campus. #2 Massachusetts Institute of Technology
In Cambridge, Massachusetts, close to Boston, is where the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was first established in 1861. At the university, there are over 11,000 students, and about 60% of them are graduate students. MIT is home to five schools: science, management, humanities, arts, and social sciences, engineering, and architecture and planning. At MIT, classes are taught in English. An "Independent Activities Period" lasting four weeks in January is part of the academic calendar's 4-1-4 structure. Although only first-year undergraduate students are required to live on campus, many students who are farther along in their studies opt to do so as well.
